An #artivism illustration I created to raise awareness about one of the ocean’s most urgent issues: bycatch.

After watching David Attenborough’s Ocean, I was relieved to see such a tragic aspect of the fishing industry finally brought to light. Wherever there is fishing, there is bycatch, an issue I’ve focused on for many years through both my illustration and photojournalism work. I hope this documentary sparks a wave of awareness about a largely unseen part of the ocean that desperately needs our attention.

Every year, over 650,000 marine mammals die as a result of the fishing industry. This is known as bycatch, when marine life is unintentionally caught in fishing nets, often leading to drowning or death by starvation. I created this piece to visually communicate the devastating impact of commercial fishing and the lives lost in its wake.

But there is hope and action we can take. We can demand that governments ban destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling. We can educate ourselves about where our seafood comes from and, where possible, choose more sustainable alternatives. We can push for the adoption of modified fishing gear that reduces bycatch. And we can make the personal choice to eat less seafood, particularly in the West, where overconsumption and waste are at an all-time high.

As highlighted in Ocean, the sea is incredibly resilient. If we just give her space to breathe, she can bounce back faster than we can imagine.

Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. We need her more than we realise.

So this shark was once the most abundant in our oceans, but they are under serious threat of becoming extinct, with their population declining by 90% they are now classed as critically endangered.

These sharks have huge rounded dorsal fins, paddle-like pectoral fins and mottled white tips that looks like someone has come along and lightly dusted them with icing sugar.

This shark needs more attention, so help me get the word out by sharing this video!

EXPOSED: Never seen before footage reveals the catastrophic impacts caused by bottom trawling!!

Bycatch and unsustainable fishing practises is something I’m hugely passionate about, watching how in Ocean with David Attenborough they expose the horrible realities of bottom trawling is something I can’t un-see. In the film they made the invisible, very visible and it’s moved me to want to continue to shout it from the roof tops! Please watch this reel and share it with everyone you know!!!

I was so excited to attend the Future Generation premiere of OCEAN with David Attenborough yesterday, especially during the week of @davidattenborough’s 99th birthday! A huge thank you to @bluemarinefoundation for inviting me and recognising my work in ocean storytelling.

I was selected as one of 15 ‘next generation’ voices, young scientists, activists, artists, communicators, and writers, who are seen as key advocates for our oceans and planet. I’m still in shock that I was chosen to stand alongside such an incredible group! Together, we walked the blue carpet and watched the first-ever screening of OCEAN.

Fun fact I had the honour to sit right behind Prince William!

You’ve never seen anything like it. It’s not just a cinematic masterpiece, it’s one of the most powerful expressions of ocean storytelling and environmental urgency I’ve ever witnessed. The film took us from awe and wonder to the raw, heartbreaking realities of industrial trawling and destructive fishing practices. David Attenborough didn’t sugar-coat anything. He made the invisible visible, the ignored impossible to ignore.

He also spotlighted the vital importance of marine protected areas and no-take zones. The film calls for at least 30% of the ocean to be protected from exploitation—right now, just 3% is.

I went through a rollercoaster of emotions, wonder, anger, heartbreak, and hope. But above all, I left feeling hopeful that change can happen, and is happening. If you leave this film without feeling the urge to take action, I honestly don’t know what will.

I urge you: go and watch OCEAN. It’s not just a “must-see”, it’s a you have to see this. It’s now showing in cinemas and streaming on major platforms.

We’ve wiped out over 70% of global shark populations, killing 100 million sharks every year!They’re apex predators, ruling the top of the food chain and keeping the whole ecosystem in balance.

Every second breath you take comes from the ocean. We need sharks to keep our oceans healthy. If sharks disappear, the ocean suffers, and so do we.

Introducing the Basking Shark!

This big, 10m long and very harmless Shark, only feeds on plankton and I personally think they look like toothless old men.

These sharks can be seen gathering in massive schools to up to 1000! They swim in a spiral motion, moving down the water column and scientists believe this has something to do with a unique mating behaviour.

These massive sharks are usually slow-moving creatures, however sometimes they can been seen jumping out of the water and we don’t really know why!

A very special moment was being apart to show @cmduke16 Apollo 16 Astronaut, the 10th and youngest man to walk on the moon my Cosmic Lover painting. A piece of art inspired by the wonders of Sea & Space 🌊✨

A magical evening being able to share my art amongst others, from influential people in the ocean and space industry, @nasa Astronauts and many inspiring and beautiful humans!

Loved sharing the space with my good friend @astro_nicole, who is an amazing artist, @nasa astronaut and co-founder of the @spaceforartfoundation. Your space suits covered in children’s art is inspiring and gives me hope!

A very special moment was being apart to show @cmduke16 Apollo 16 Astronaut, the 10th and youngest man to walk on the moon my Cosmic Lover painting. A piece of art inspired by the wonders of Sea & Space 🌊✨

A magical evening being able to share my art amongst others, from influential people in the ocean and space industry, @nasa Astronauts and many inspiring and beautiful humans!

Loved sharing the space with my good friend @astro_nicole, who is an amazing artist, @nasa astronaut and co-founder of the @spaceforartfoundation. Your space suits covered in children’s art is inspiring and gives me hope!

Do you know what a Pointy Nose Blue Chimaera is?

🦈 This incredible creature is also known as a Ghost shark and is apart of the Ratfish family.

🦈 Pointy Nose Blue Chimaera can be found in the Pacific and Southern oceans deep sea, living at depths of 600 to 2000 metres!

🦈 We actually don’t know alot about this creature, and most of our research comes from deep sea trawlers as they sadly get caught as bycatch.

🦈 Something that I find very fitting to the 200 Sharks project is this creature’s scientific name, Hydrolagus trolli, is named after the artist @Ray.troll. He creates awesome artworks to raise awareness of the ratfish family, really recommend going and checking out his art!

I’m excited to finally share that my 200 Sharks project has made it to the front cover of the latest issue of @scubadivingmag in collaboration with @paditv! The feature includes an incredible four double-page spreads filled with illustrations and stories of sharks and rays, created to spark emotion and connection.

By blending writing, visual art, and QR codes that link to my videos, we hope to shine a much-needed spotlight on some of the most misunderstood and underrepresented creatures on the planet.

🎨About the Project:
The 200 Sharks series is an ambitious social media campaign illustrating 200 Chondrichthyans - sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras, to raise awareness of these incredible creatures. Every 60 seconds, 200 sharks vanish from our oceans. Through illustration, I explore their habitats, behaviours, biology, and diversity, aiming to inspire over 1 million people to see them in a new light and take action to protect these vital ocean guardians.

Did you know - Sharks are older than trees, they’ve been swimming in our oceans for over 450 million years, that’s older than dinosaurs! We’ve wiped out over 70% of global shark populations, killing 100 million sharks every year!They’re apex predators, ruling the top of the food chain and keeping the whole ecosystem in balance.

Every second breath you take comes from the ocean. We need sharks to keep our oceans healthy. If sharks disappear, the ocean suffers, and so do we.
