Last year, I was invited by Mars Sustainable Solutions to document the vital coral restoration work led by @shebahopegrows. During this visit, I witnessed local community members carefully tying coral fragments, collected from a neighbouring healthy reef, onto reef stars.

Here they are working collaboratively to lay down these reef stars onto the Hope Reef restoration sight, offering this once-rubble reef a renewed fighting chance. Together, they are giving their patch of ocean the chance to thrive once more.

Come with me as I document seagrass seed collection with the @hantsiwwildlife. Last summer they collected 180,000 seeds along the Solent coastline which will be re-planted back into the Solent starting this month!

Along the southern coastline of the United Kingdom, one of the most unwild nations on Earth, a growing movement is working to bring the ocean back to life. In the Solent, scientists, conservationists and local communities are restoring once-lost seagrass meadows through the @solentseascapeproject, a five-year initiative and one of the largest marine rewilding efforts in the world.

Often called the lungs of the ocean, seagrass is important for carbon storage. Yet we’ve lost 92% of seagrass meadows in the UK over the last century.

In my ongoing project “The Ocean Gardeners,” I document the people behind this recovery. I hope my work helps captures this reimagining of what “wild” means in one of the busiest waterways in the United Kingdom and empowering communities to protect the ocean’s future.

A critically endangered baby scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) once bycatch is now being offered a fighting chance as a local fisher releases it back into the ocean apart of the NGO @kebersamaan_untuk_lautan

In northern Sumatra lies a crucial nursery ground for endangered sharks and rays, from scalloped hammerheads to wedgefish. Yet these young animals are constantly at risk of bycatch, where non-target species are unintentionally caught in fishing gear.

Here, small-scale local fisheries, often just one or two men per boat, land catches that are nearly 80% endangered or critically endangered sharks and rays. Their gillnets stretch 300 metres across the seabed at depths of 30–40 metres and are left for up to 12 hours. Sharks must keep moving to breathe, making entanglement almost always fatal.

Losing young sharks disrupts the entire balance of the ocean. As apex predators, sharks regulate marine life, transport nutrients, and act as indicators of ocean health. Protecting sharks is not just about saving one species; it is about safeguarding whole ecosystems.

But there is hope!

The NGO, @kebersamaan_untuk_lautan (KUL) programme, compensates fishers to safely release critically endangered sharks and rays (as you can see here). Research by Dr Hollie Booth (@dr_hollie_booth) from Oxford University shows that payments of around $1 per hammerhead and $5–7 per wedgefish provide the most effective incentive, offering a lifeline to a species with fins worth hundreds of dollars on the black market.

This is a truly pioneering project, one that works with fishers to safeguard critically endangered sharks and rays while helping create a more secure and sustainable future for the communities that depend on these waters.

False Clown Anemonefish, ‘Amphiprion ocellaris’

A little friend I spotted on a dive just one week ago! These fish share a beautiful symbiotic relationship with their home, the anemone. They receive protection from predators, while the clownfish chases away butterflyfish that prey on anemones and nourishes their host with waste. They also have a unique defense: a thick, specialized layer of mucus that makes them immune to the anemone’s lethal sting.

Another fun fact about these small but highly territorial fish is that all clownfish are born male. If the dominant female in a group dies, the largest male changes sex and becomes the new breeding female.

Now you know a little more about one of the most iconic reef fish!

Sharks are at a tipping point. They are dying at an alarming rate, and not only because of the illegal shark fin trade. Bycatch is a major, often overlooked threat to their survival, and we urgently need alternative and more sustainable fishing practices to protect them.

Sharks are among the most ancient and diverse species on Earth, with 450 million years of unique evolutionary history. Losing them would erase entire branches of life’s tree and the invaluable scientific insights their genetic code offers for medicine and innovation. They are essential to healthy ocean ecosystems, moving nutrients, maintaining reef diversity and abundance, and even helping oceans store carbon, playing a role in the fight against climate change.
So let’s ask the uncomfortable question: Where is our fish coming from? Because right now, the level of bycatch globally is unsustainable. If we don’t act, the ocean will pay the price first and we’ll be next.

When photographing @projectseagrass planting seagrass seeds in the Solent last year, I was struck by how the quadrat frame became the perfect device for framing the researchers throughout the morning’s session. As a photographer, I’m always drawn to the small details, and when I pressed the shutter in this moment, it felt as though life had arranged itself perfectly.

With over 90% of the UK’s seagrass meadows lost, the restoration of this vital blue carbon habitat has never been more important. Last year, I had the privilege of documenting one of the world’s largest rewilding efforts taking place along the Solent, one of the busiest water ways in the UK. As I continue to follow the project, I look forward to seeing this once-scarce ecosystem begin to flourish again in the years ahead.

Last year I traveled to Palau whilst on assignment with @scubadivingmag onboard the @blackpearlpalau to explore the wonders of Palau for the April issue!

It’s weeks like this that make me feel alive, reminding me why I fell in love with scuba diving in the first place. Reflecting on our time here, what stays with me most is the sheer abundance of life: reefs thick with movement, predators cruising with confidence, ecosystems quietly doing what they’ve done for millennia.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to photograph a single coral polyp, only a few weeks old at a microscopic level under a UV light. What an incredible thing to capture and it opened up my mind to this whole new world our eyes never get to experience. From microscopic scales to colour spectrums. Looking forward to doing more of this going into 2026 and thank you @jamiecraggs for the opportunity! Your coral labs is a creative minds playground!
